The time has come for you too to get to know Rome in 5 days . The Eternal City that puts you in a time capsule from the moment you set foot on land. It is clear that two of its great protagonists are the Colosseum and the Vatican , with its impressive Sistine Chapel . I think none of them need an introduction.

Rome also has the famous Baths of Caracalla , the Circus Maximus where you can use your imagination to understand what chariot races were like and many other jewels of Ancient Rome , such as the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum .The Colosseum is one of the most famous places to see in Rome in 5 days.

What to see in Rome in 5 days: itinerary

First day in Rome: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and surroundings to Piazza Farnese

I took the first flight from Madrid to Rome , which lasted 2 hours and a half, so at 10 in the morning I was already in the Italian capital. We went to the hotel to check-in, left our luggage and left quickly to enjoy a first contact on this trip through Rome in 5 days .

I recommend you start with some of the most famous monuments in Rome, such as the Colosseum, the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum . It is very important that you book your ticket here in advance so that the same thing that happened to me does not happen to you.Seeing the ruins of Ancient Rome, one seems to have stepped into a time machine.Seeing the ruins of Ancient Rome, one seems to have stepped into a time machine.

Then visit the Capitoline Museums , the Piazza del Campidoglio where the replica of the Capitoline Wolf is located , and take a leisurely walk along the Via del Foro Imperial to see the impressive Trajan ‘s Forum

Day 2 in Rome: Castel Sant’Angelo and the most famous squares and fountains in Rome

The second day I recommend you start with this tour of the Castel Sant’Angelo , an ancient Roman mausoleum and refuge for the popes. Apart from touring this beautiful castle next to the Tiber river, you can go up to the terrace from where you have amazing panoramic views of Rome and the Vatican City. The Castel Sant'Angelo was an ancient Roman mausoleum and the views from there are amazing. The Castel Sant’Angelo was an ancient Roman mausoleum and the views from there are amazing.

Day 3 in Rome: Vatican, Trastevere and Jewish Quarter

We follow the itinerary of the places to see in Rome in 5 days to visit the Vatican , which is the most visited site in Rome along with the Colosseum. You may be interested in the OMNIA Vatican & Rome Card , since it includes St. Peter’s Basilica , the Sistine Chapel , the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum , Roman Forum and Palatine Hill , among others. You save a lot of money.

Regardless of whether you are a believer or not, I assure you that a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica (admission is free) is well worth it . Also a must is the Vatican Museums , where you can see the largest collection of art from the Roman Catholic Church, and finish at the Sistine Chapel , which needs no introduction. It is important to book your ticket to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel in advance online. It is important to book your ticket to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel in advance online.

Apart from strolling through its cobbled streets and entering the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere , you have to eat at Tonnarello, one of the best restaurants to eat in Rome . We liked it so much that we went back 3 times. Then you can finish the third day in Rome knowing the old Jewish quarter . You have this tour of Trastevere and the Jewish quarter in case you are interested. The plant-covered facades of Trastevere are gorgeous.

Fourth day: Circus Maximus, Baths of Caracalla, Mouth of Truth and several basilicas

No wonder Rome is known as the Eternal City , because we would need a lifetime to get to know it in depth. On the fourth day of this itinerary through Rome in 5 days , I suggest you start in an area a little further from the center, but no less impressive for that.

Roman circuses attract my attention , as they make me imagine what chariot races were like in the past , almost as exciting as they were dangerous. In Spain we have the Roman circus of Mérida , one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula. But of course, it cannot compete with the Circus Maximus in Rome , which could accommodate up to 300,000 spectators. You can book this guided tour of the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla with a guide in Spanish.Although you have to use your imagination, chariot races were held here in the past.Altought you have to use your imagination, chariot races were held here in the past.

Day 5: Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, Quirinal Palace and return flight

We finish the itinerary of the places to see in Rome in 5 days in Villa Borghese , the most famous park in Rome. Apart from strolling through its gardens on foot or on a scooter (they rent them directly there), I recommend visiting the Casina dell’Orologio , the Casa del Cinema and the Pincio viewpoint , from where you have the best views of Piazza del Popolo with its two twin churches. On this guided tour of Villa Borghese you will get to know this famous park very thoroughly.Villa Borghese reminded me a lot of El Retiro Park in Madrid.Villa Borghese reminded me a lot of El Retiro Park in Madrid..

But the crown jewel of this park is the Borghese Gallery , one of the most important art museums in the world. During your visit to the Borghese Gallery you will discover hundreds of amazing sculptures, paintings and antiques, such as the canvas ‘Lady with a Unicorn’ by Raphael Sanzio or ‘Boy with a Basket of Fruit’ by Caravaggio.
