As the catalog of streaming video platforms grows, it is increasingly difficult to find something to watch . To solve this problem, Netflix allows us to play content randomly according to the content that we have previously seen on the platform, a function that, it must be said, works quite well, at least in my case.
However, this option is not available on other platforms, such as HBO, where the content is not as extensive as that offered by Netflix. To try to help you in the task of looking for what to watch on HBO, here we show you the best HBO movies .
The first thing we must take into account is that the catalog in movie format available on all streaming video platforms is subject to a series of agreements, agreements that expire over time and the content is no longer available on the platform.
This expiration does not happen with the original series, series that are only and will be available on the platform forever and ever.
The list of the best HBO movies of all themes has been published in August 2021 . If you consult this list a long time later, it is likely that some of the films are no longer available.
Alien: The Eighth Passenger
A true classic of science fiction for which despite being 1979, the years do not pass. This is because at that time animatronics were used instead of computer effects that practically did not exist. Behind this film is Ridley Scott, director of other films such as Blade Runner, Gladiator…
Alien: The eighth passenger takes us to the Nostromo, a transport ship that lands on a planet where one of the crew is attacked by a creature that lays eggs inside.
Aliens: The Return
The second part, Aliens: The Return, is the continuation of this first part, where the main character also appears: Sigourney Weaver in the role of Ellen Ripley. If you have not yet had the opportunity to enjoy the Alien saga, the first two are the best of them all.
In this second film, Ripley is rescued after leaving the Nostromo to survive the creature that had killed her entire crew. The planet where they found the creature that she infected one of her crew in the first film has been colonized . From there, everything can go.
American History X
Starring Edward Norton, American History X follows a young man who embraces white supremacy after his father’s death , eventually ending up in jail, where he realizes how wrong he was.
When he is released from prison, he learns how his brother, played by Edward Furlong, has followed in his footsteps and is making the same mistakes he has made in the past. More than recommended film not suitable for sensitive stomachs.
Billie Elliot
Billie Elliot is a young man whose father forces him to learn boxing , however, he discovers his passion for dance. The movie shows us the different obstacles that she faces on her way to achieve her goal.
Black hawk shot down
Ridley Scott, director of Alien, is behind this fantastic war film that takes us back to 1993 and reconstructs the failed operation of the American army in Somalia, where a group of elite soldiers from the American army must rescue their fallen comrades after his Black Hawk was shot down.
The soldiers have to face all the citizens of the city of Mogadishu , while trying to find and recover alive the companions who are falling. If you like action and war movies, in Black Hawk Down you’ll find an excellent title that won’t disappoint you.
Contagion
Steven Soderbergh is the director of Contagion, a film that shows us how a virus from China spreads throughout the world causing millions of deaths and is about to eradicate humanity (it seems that it was a harbinger of what has happened with the coronavirus).
The film is a thriller that shows us from the first infections to its devastating effects on the world population until a vaccine is finally achieved.
Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan, director of the latest Batman trilogy played by Christian Bale, is behind this film, a historical film that takes us back to 1940 and shows us the advance of the Germans on the Allies to the English Channel.
In music, we find Hans Zimmer , a German composer known for his work on Interstellar, Gladiator, Inception, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Da Vinci Code, the Batman trilogy directed by Nolan, The Last Samurai…
A star has been born
In A Star Is Born we find Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in a remake of the 1976 version , where the music and performances shine by themselves.
Even if you don’t like the musical genre, you should give this movie a try, which shows us how Jackson Maine (Bradley) and Ally (Gaga) meet, who struggles to succeed in the world of music.
Joker
Joaquin Phoenix stars in this movie from the DC comics universe that has nothing to do with the movies of this genre. Phoenix plays the best-known villain of Batman, during his beginnings and shows us, from another point of view, all the events that made him the Joker.
Joaquín Phoenix received the Oscar from the Hollywood Academy for this film, a film that received 11 nominations although it only got two of them.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
4 years after its premiere, director Zack Snyder has been able to make his own version without impositions, a much more outstanding version than the one that premiered 4 years ago.
With a duration of almost 4 hours, if you did not like the version that was released in theaters, you should give it a second chance with this version, a version that has been very well received by both critics and DC fans.
The arrival
Praised by some and criticized by others , we find ourselves in Arrival, a film directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. The film shows us how a group of ships has come to earth and try to communicate with us to let us know their intentions.
The film is not an action or science fiction work beyond the ships that land on earth. If you’re looking for a sci-fi movie, you won’t find it here. Arrival is more of a film where you have to put your head to work more than usual.
Lincoln
Steven Spielberg adapted the novel by Doris Kearns in which he shows us the worst years of the American Civil War through President Abraham Lincoln, a role played by Daniel Day-Lewis.
Lincoln was the president who decided to ban slavery in the United States . If you like American history, you should give this fantastic movie based on true events a try.
The hateful eight
Quentin Taratino’s film that brings us the western genre back and features Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen , among others.
The film shot with the same cameras used in the film Ben-Hur shows us the story of a bounty hunter who takes a fugitive and takes refuge in a store where they meet different people each with a story that count.
As in most of Quentin Taratino’s films, the dialogue and violence shine by themselves . If you don’t like the western genre, as is my case, I invite you to take a look at it and you’ll see how it has nothing to do with those movies that you remember from this genre.
Matrix
The Matrix shows us Neo (Keanu Reeves) who is looking for answers to the messages he receives. Searching for him, he meets Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) who will show him the reality that lies behind it all.
This film is where he first used the bullet time visual effect , which consists of an extreme slowing down of the action to allow to see very fast movements and events, such as the path of a bullet while the camera is changing the angle of vision.
Rocky
Rocky, played by Sylvester Stallone , shows us Rocky Balboa, a boxer who wants to reach the top and fights for it until he succeeds.
Rocky became a franchise that continues to this day through the Creed movies and previously with Rocky Balboa. This film won 3 Oscars from the Hollywood Academy in which Silvester Stallone was nominated for best leading actor.
Scream
Behind Scream is director Wes Craven, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street . This was the first of a series of movies under the same name that were not as successful as this one, but became a new genre where teenagers drop like flies until there can only be one left.
Speed
Speed puts Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves together on a bus, a bus that can’t go below 50 mph because an ex-cop has planted a bomb that will detonate automatically.
An action movie like the ones made in the 90s that you should give a try and that surely won’t disappoint you.
Ready Player One
Ready Player One is based on the novel by Ernest Cline, a novel that sold the rights to a movie before being written and where the author takes us to a dystopian future where life (work, studies, travel…) takes place entirely in a video game .
Full of references to the classic video games of all life , Ready Player One is a movie that all of us who lived through that time should see. Behind this film, is Steven Spielberg where, unlike some of his last films, he manages to hook us from the first minute to the last and it’s more than 2 hours.
Reservoir Dogs
Once again we have to talk about Quentin Taratino who is behind this film that allowed him to make himself known in the world of cinema through the front door. The film shows us the planning, robbery and consequences of an event that goes wrong.
In Reservoir Dogs we meet Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen and even the director himself, although he has a very brief role.
One of ours
Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta . The film shows us how money and personal ambitions are capable of destroying the bonds of friendship. This movie is based on the story of Henry Hill, who was part of the Gambino family for 25 years.
